Medicare Changes for Florida Residents

TL;DR

Florida has one of the largest and most competitive Medicare Advantage markets in the country. Sarasota and Manatee County residents typically have 30+ Advantage plans to choose from, plus every standardized Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan. That's more choice — but also more chances to pick the wrong plan.

What's different about Florida

Florida's mix of retirees, snowbirds, and year-round residents drives a deep Medicare market. Most Sarasota and Manatee County zip codes have multiple $0-premium Medicare Advantage plans, several Medicare Supplement (Medigap) carriers, and a wide range of stand-alone Part D drug plans.

Snowbird and travel considerations

If you split time between Florida and another state, your plan choice matters. Most Medicare Advantage HMO plans cover emergency care nationwide, but routine care outside the service area is often not covered. Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plus a stand-alone Part D plan typically travels better — the same policy works anywhere Medicare is accepted.

Local networks to know

Sarasota Memorial, Manatee Memorial, Doctors Hospital of Sarasota, Blake Medical Center, and Lakewood Ranch Medical Center are commonly requested by residents. Network participation varies by plan and can change year to year — always verify before enrolling.

More choice = more careful review

With 30+ plans available in most local zip codes, an annual review during AEP is not optional — it's the only way to make sure the plan you have is still the right one.
